Weaving Belfast's Story

Striking Yellow

For the bold, unmistakable yellow of Samson and Goliath, the legendary Harland & Wolff gantries that tower over the eastern approaches, standing as enduring emblems of the city's world-dominating shipbuilding and maritime heritage.

Vibrant Blues

For the deep, life-giving waters of Belfast Lough and the River Lagan, the arteries of trade and growth; and for the gentle blue petals of the flax flower that once bloomed in the fields around the city.

Ancient Red

For the warm, weathered red of Belfast's iconic brick buildings—the terraced streets, Victorian warehouses, and grand institutions that form the very fabric of the city, built from local clays and standing as testaments to its industrial past and enduring character.

The White Linen Hall stood in place until it's demolition to make way for the current Belfast City Hall.

Dazzling White

For the pure, world-famous Irish linen spun from that flax, which earned Belfast its proud nickname "Linenopolis" and carried its reputation across the globe.

Solid Black

For the steadfast Black Mountain in the west, a dark, protective presence whose shadow has sheltered generations of Belfast families and shaped the city's western communities.

The Belfast Tartan

And so the Belfast Tartan was born:

  • Black bounded by Yellow for the two cranes of Harland and Wolff;

  • Double Red bounded by Black to capture a terraced city street in the shadow of black moutain.

  • Light Blue with White at the center for the flax flowers that produce the linen;

  • The fade from Dark Blue to Light Blue to White for the sea, the river Lagan and the breakers hitting the shore;

Endless Inspiration

A view of Belfast from a walking path on Black Mountain.

What inspired you to create a dedicated tartan for Belfast, and how did the partnership with Belfast City Council shape the final design?The inspiration came from a deep love for our city and a desire to weave its unique story into something people could wear with pride—its towering cranes, resilient communities, flowing waters, linen legacy, and those unmistakable red-bricks that define our streets.

Partnering with Belfast City Council gave the project real civic heart; their support ensured the design truly reflected Belfast's shared heritage and helped bring this symbol of our place to life in a way that honours everyone who calls it home.

How did you decide on each element of the symbolism, ensuring the weave truly captured the rich, layered history of our beloved city?

Every thread was chosen with intention, drawing directly from the landmarks and legacies that have shaped Belfast over generations.

We wanted the design to feel authentic and personal—capturing the bold energy of the shipyards, the quiet strength of the Black Mountain, the life-giving waters of the Lough and Lagan, the global reach of our linen past, and the warm character of our red-brick buildings.It was about creating a tartan that tells Belfast's full story in every line and stripe.

In what ways do you hope the Belfast Tartan will become a timeless piece that people wear to celebrate their connection to the city and its enduring spirit?We hope it becomes more than fabric—a way for people near and far to carry a piece of Belfast with them, whether at a wedding, a match, or just walking the streets.It should feel timeless and versatile, blending our proud past with everyday pride, so that wearing it sparks conversations, stirs memories, and reminds us all of the resilient, vibrant spirit that makes this city so special.
